A Fortress Against the Corsairs

Step back to the year 1618, when Wignacourt Towers Malta. Saint Mary’s Tower Comino was erected with a crucial mission in mind – protecting the island of Comino from the relentless attacks of marauding Corsairs. This formidable stronghold also served as a vital communication link between Gozo and Malta, ensuring swift responses to potential threats on Gozo’s shores.

With a determined resolve, funds for the construction were raised through the sale of Comino Brushwood, resulting in a grand total of 18,628 scudi, 5 Tari and 10 Grandi. Undoubtedly, Saint Mary’s Tower was the most expensive among the Wignacourt towers, with the high costs reflecting the logistical challenges faced during its construction.

Although the identity of the architect remains shrouded in mystery, one thing is certain – Vittorio Cassar, a renowned architect of the time, was not responsible for this particular masterpiece, as he had already passed away when the construction commenced.

A Tower of Grandeur

The Tower’s Arsenal

By 1791, Saint Mary’s Tower boasted an impressive arsenal, including two 12-pound iron cannons, one 10-pound bronze cannon, a 4-pound bronze cannon, and two three-pound bronze cannons. As if that were not enough, Saint Mary’s Battery and Saint Mary’s Redoubt were constructed along Comino’s coastline in 1715, housing a formidable garrison of 130 men and featuring eight 32-pounders and ten 24-pounder cannons. Together, they formed an impregnable line of defense against any potential invaders.

Witnessing Turmoil and Transformation

Saint Mary’s Tower has stood witness to countless events that have shaped Malta’s history. During the French blockade, the tower served as a prison for suspected spies, housing Maltese insurgents and their British allies. In a show of resilience, the insurgents relocated the tower’s cannons to blockade batteries, bombarding French positions in a desperate bid for victory.

In the year 1829, the British abandoned the tower, leaving it to the custody of local civil authorities. Over the following decades, it found use as an isolation hospital and even as a wintering pen for farm animals. The tower once again played its part during both World Wars, serving as a strategic outpost for military operations.

A Beacon of Preservation

In 1892, the Malta Armed Forces took possession of Saint Mary’s Tower, utilizing it as a lookout and staffing post to combat contraband activities and the illegal hunting of migratory birds at sea. However, in 2002, a significant change took place when the tower was handed over to Din L-art Helwa, a prominent heritage organization. Thanks to their dedicated efforts, the tower underwent extensive restoration, returning it to its former glory.
