2.Great Siege of Malta Facts (Quick Overview)

  • Date: May–September 1565

  • Attackers: ~25,000 to 40,000 Ottoman troops , excluding galley slaves, sailors

  • Defenders: ~7,000 to around 8,000  Knights, soldiers, and Maltese fighting men, excluding the civilians

  • Key Figures: Jean de Valette, Mustafa Pasha

  • Outcome: Ottoman withdrawal and strategic failure

Despite overwhelming odds, the defenders held, not because victory was certain, but because retreat was impossible , good leadership, unwavering courage ,many Ottoman blunders, some luck,  and reinforcements from Sicily

3. Who Were the Knights of St John?

The Knights Hospitaller were a multinational military order with centuries of experience fighting Ottoman forces. After losing Rhodes in 1522, Malta became their final stronghold.

By 1565:

  • Malta was their last base after a series of setbacks, like also losing Tripoli to Dragut

  • Defeat meant extinction of the Order

  • Survival meant controlling the Mediterranean crossroads

This context explains why the defence was so absolute.

4. 1565 Malta Siege Explained: Fort St Elmo’s Role

Military doctrine predicted Fort St Elmo would fall in around 3 days.

Instead, it held for around 30 days.

Why it mattered:

Delayed Ottoman entry into Grand Harbour

Cost the Ottomans thousands of elite troops

Bought time to strengthen Birgu and Senglea, and help to arrive

Lucky stroke of luck – Brought about the death of Targut Reis, the most capable Ottoman Commander of his age

Today, Fort St Elmo still guards Valletta’s harbour entrance — its walls rebuilt, but its role unchanged.

5. Jean de Valette: The Man Behind Valletta

The defence was led by Jean de Valette, a 71-year-old veteran hardened by decades of war and captivity.

Valette:

  • Refused evacuation of Fort St Elmo

  • Personally fought on breached walls and inspired confidence that gave the defenders that extra edge when all seemed lost

  • Planned Malta’s post-siege fortifications

After the siege, Valletta was built and named in his honour — a city designed so that 1565 could never happen again.

6. Why the Ottomans Failed at Malta

Historians agree the failure was not due to a single mistake, but cumulative pressure:

  • Extreme summer heat and disease

  • Rivalry between the attacking commanders General Mustapha Pasha and Admiral Piali Pasha

  • Massive casualties at Fort St Elmo

  • Unexpected civilian resistance and over- confidence by the Ottomans that led to many serious mistakes with heavy consequences

  • Arrival of a Spanish relief force

The Ottoman withdrawal marked the end of westward Ottoman expansion in the Mediterranean and they choose to focus more on the Eastern part taking Cyprus a few years later and eventually Crete.

7. Why the Great Siege of Malta Still Matters

The Great Siege of Malta changed history by proving that:

  • Moral victory – Ottoman armies were not unstoppable and gave greater confidence

  • Fortified positions could bleed empires dry and Small places could decide global outcomes

  • The Knights of St.John decide to finally abandon re-conquering Rhodes and make Malta their home, (eventually becoming known as the Knights of Malta) thus shaping Malta’s destiny forever

Within years, European powers invested heavily in Mediterranean defences  inspired directly by Malta’s survival.

Great Siege of Malta: A Final Thought

The Great Siege of Malta did not end because the defenders won outright, nor was it solely due to the bravery of the defenders which was crucial.  You will hear many “facts” about the great siege which are simply NOT TRUE or have been inflated or exaggerated for marketing purposes by the Knights.

It ended because the Ottomans lost the will to continue and “Winter was coming”  and help from Sicily

It ended because of many factors too many to list, some we probably will never really know of however some of the main elements were; good leadership by the Knights, help came, geography favoured the defenders and so did lady luck!

Either way Malta held…and history changed.
