When planning a vacation to Malta, Valletta or Mdina are often the focus. But, if you’re a fan of fortified cities, don’t miss out on the captivating Three Cities.
These cities possess undeniable charm. They’re historically significant due to their role in the Great Siege. Today, we’ve rounded up some fascinating fun facts about the three cities in Malta. These ancient gems that will surely pique your interest.
Multiple names and meanings
The first fun facts about the three cities in Malta is that each of the Three Cities has two names. This can sometimes be confusing. In Maltese, they are known as Bormla, Isla, and Birgu. However, in English, they go by different names: Vittoriosa (Birgu), Senglea (Isla), and Cospicua (Bormla).
After the triumphant defense against the Turks during the Great Siege, Birgu was renamed Citta Vittoriosa, meaning the Victorious City, by the Knights of St. John. The largest of the three cities, Bormla, earned the name Citta Cospicua, the Conspicuous City, due to its imposing fortifications, bestowed upon it by Grand Master Marc Antonio Zondadari after an intensive fortification building program.
Lastly, Senglea, originally called Isla. Renamed after the man responsible for fortifying it before the Great Siege, Grand Master de la Sengela. Despite facing numerous attacks, this resilient city remained unscathed and acquired the nickname “Citta Invicta,” meaning the Invincible City.
Birgu – the first “Capital” city of the Knights of St. John in Malta
Did you know that Vittoriosa/Birgu was the Knight’s first capital city on the island? Despite the beauty and grandeur of Mdina, this honor belongs to Vittoriosa/Birgu, which boasts its own remarkable history. When the Knights of St. John first settled on our shores, they established Vittoriosa/Birgu as the capital city much to the horror of the Mdina nobles!
Birgu pre-dates Valletta
Speaking of history, Vittoriosa/Birgu is even older than Valletta itself! Its exact founding date remains uncertain, but it predates Valletta as the first stone of Valletta was laid after the Great Siege. If you happen to book your holiday during October, you can experience the “Birgufest,” an annual event in Birgu that allows you to explore the stunning architecture of this ancient city by candlelight.
Witness more sieges than you can count
The Three Cities were not only witnesses to the Great Siege but also endured significant damage during the Second World War. Malta, becoming one of the most heavily bombed places on Earth, saw the three cities targeted due to their strategic positions along the harbour. Despite the destruction, these cities were painstakingly restored to their former glory in the decades that followed.
