Lippija Tower-A Timeless Sentinel
Nestled on the edge of the Wardija ridge, overlooking the stunning Gnejna Bay, stands the magnificent Lippija Tower. Dating back to 1637, the Lippija Tower is the oldest Lascaris Tower, and it remains in remarkable condition today.
Originally known as Torre Del Migiarro, Italian architect Vincenzo Maculani designed Lippija Tower, and Lascaris funded it. Its architectural twin, Ghajn Tuffieha Tower, shares the same design. With a square layout, two floors, and a parapet-adorned flat roof, Lippija Tower exudes an air of grandeur.
Inside, each floor houses a single room, and in the past, a wooden ladder provided access to the upper floor. The tower once housed a chapel dedicated to Santa Agatha, adding spiritual significance to its history.
In the early 2000s, neglect and the looming threat of collapse endangered Lippija Tower. Restoration efforts in 2003 saved this remarkable structure from destruction. Today, it proudly stands as a testament to Malta’s rich heritage.
Għajn Tuffieħa Tower-A Coastal Gem
Situated near Mellieħa and Mġarr, Għajn Tuffieħa Tower overlooks the majestic cliffs of Għajn Tuffieħa Bay. Constructed in 1637, this watchtower is one of the Lascaris Towers like its counterpart, Lippija Tower.
Designed by Vincenzo Maculani, Għajn Tuffieħa Tower shares the same architectural style as Lippija Tower. Originally armed with a pounder gun, it housed a captain and three men, paid by the University of Mdina. Imagine the stories these walls could tell!
Like many historical treasures, Għajn Tuffieħa Tower fell into disrepair over time. Fortunately, Din l-Art Ħelwa restored it in 2000, preserving its cultural significance.In 2012, graffiti vandalism marred the tower, but it was swiftly restored. The tower opened to the public in 2013, allowing visitors to explore its history.
