Sciuta Tower: Where Legends Come to Life

Nestled in the charming village of Qrendi, the Sciuta Tower stands proudly as a testament to Malta’s past. It’s also known as Torri ta’ Xuta or the Wied iz-Zurrieq Tower. This small watchtower was built in 1638, making it the fifth tower of the renowned Lascaris Towers. Through the years, it has undergone restorations thanks to the efforts of the foundation Din l-Art Helwa. These efforts have preserved its remarkable heritage.

But that’s not all—Sciuta Tower played a crucial role in shaping Malta’s architectural history. It served as a prototype for the magnificent De Redin Towers, constructed in 1658 and 1659. The tower’s significance doesn’t stop there. During the British occupation of Malta in 1800, it remained in use. It was manned by the Royal Malta Fencible Regiment and later the Malta Fencible Artillery.

While time may have brought changes, Sciuta Tower still bears witness to its illustrious past. Visit the tower today, and you’ll discover an original cannon dating back to the Order rule. It’s proudly displayed on its roof. It’s a fascinating reminder of the tower’s military heritage and an opportunity for you to immerse yourself in history.

St. George’s Tower: Old Hidden Secret

Situated in the picturesque grounds of the Corinthia Hotel in George’s Bay, St. George’s Tower offers an enchanting glimpse into Malta’s medieval past. Additionally, it is known as Torri San Ġorġ. Built in 1638, this architectural gem has remarkably stood the test of time. Consequently, it captivates visitors with its commanding presence.

Originally occupying the site of a medieval watch post, the tower boasts a storied past. Maps from the Knight period, for example, depict it as “Cala S Giorgio,” St. George’s Point. This intriguing detail undeniably adds to its allure. Over the years, the tower underwent several transformations to adapt to changing times. For instance, during the British period, it served as a Fire Control Station once Fort Pembroke was constructed.

Moreover, St. George’s Tower has witnessed its fair share of historical events. It notably functioned as a radio communications post during the Second World War. Furthermore, it even appeared in a painting from 1916, which depicted the British Additions. Its historical significance, therefore, did not go unnoticed. Consequently, it was recognized as a Grade I National Museum Monument by Mepa in 1995.
