Discover Nadur and Qawra Tower: A Historical Journey

Prepare to embark on a captivating adventure through time as we discover the Nadur and Qawra Towers nestled in the heart of Malta

Nadur Tower

Nestled in Bingemma Gap near Rabat, Malta, Nadur Tower is a true island gem. Erected in 1637 as one of the renowned Lascaris towers, it proudly showcases Malta’s rich history. Unlike its coastal counterparts, Nadur Tower stood strategically inland, serving as a vital relay station connecting Lippija, Ghajn Tuffieha towers, and the majestic Mdina. From its vantage point, this tower offers breathtaking views of the island’s western region.

Though slightly smaller than its counterparts, Nadur Tower has a unique charm with its single-floor structure. Nevertheless, in 2008, it suffered from an unfortunate incident where vandals damaged it with burnt oil. However, thanks to dedicated efforts, the tower has been lovingly restored to its former glory.

Qawra Tower

Let’s explore the remarkable Qawra Tower, also known as Qawra Point Tower or Fra Ben Tower. Located near the National Aquarium, this quaint watchtower was constructed in 1638 as the fourth of the esteemed Lascaris towers. In 1715, an artillery battery was added, further enhancing its historical significance.

Today, the tower has transformed into an extraordinary restaurant, offering delicious cuisine within its historic walls. As you dine, admire the stunning design, featuring two floors, each with a single, charming room. In 1715, a semi-circular gun battery with a low parapet and mounted guns was added. The battery’s architecture includes two blockhouses connected by a V-shaped redan.

Recognized as a treasure on the Antiquities List of 1925, Qawra Tower has witnessed centuries of history. Before WWII, the battery was equipped with two concrete guns, and a pillbox was added for extra defense. Now, the tower serves as a delightful restaurant, while the former battery area invites visitors to relax by its swimming pool.
